Kate Winslet (Labor Day)

With her performance in Labor Day, English actress Kate Winslet received her 10th Golden Globe nomination. She won twice in 2009, as Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama for Revolutionary Road, and as Best Supporting Actress for The Reader (for which she also won an Academy Award). “What a year that was for me!” she says with a radiant smile. In 2012 she won her third Golden Globe as Best Actress in the miniseries category for Mildred Pierce. In Jason Reitman’s Labor Day, adapted from Joyce Maynard’s 2009 novel, Winslet plays Adele, a mentally fragile, reclusive single mom of a 13-year-old son who gives shelter to an escaped convict (Josh Brolin), during a long late-summer week-end. “At the end of the day,” Winslet explains, “the only thing that is wrong in this relationship is that he’s just escaped from prison. Other than that, their relationship is beautiful and deep. I find it a very romantic movie, though a bizarre one.” Born in 1975 in Reading, Berkshire, England, 38-year-old Winslet has embraced difficult and original projects from the beginning of her film career. We remember her in Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures back in 1994, her first big break at age 17, as an obsessive adolescent who commits a brutal murder and lives in a fantasy world with her best friend. Born to a family of actors, Kate discovered her talent and passion – acting, that is – at an early age. She worked professionally for the first time at 11, dancing opposite the Honey Monster (don’t even mention it to her – her fair skin becomes adorably red-pepper), in a commercial for children’s cereal. She started taking acting lessons around that time, and then enrolled in a performing arts high school which led to her casting in Heavenly Creatures. After Sense and Sensibility (1995), which earned her first Golden Globe and Oscar nominations, she became universally famous as Rose in the mega-blockbuster Titanic (1997) for which she received both nominations again. She followed that success with smaller movies and less obvious choices like the quirky Hideous Kinky about Esther Freud, the daughter of painter Lucian Freud and great-granddaughter of Sigmund Freud, and the provocative Holy Smoke in which she played a young woman, allegedly a victim of a cult, whom Harvey Keitel tries to de-program, with disastrous results for him, and period pieces like Quills. In these films she displayed a nonchalant approach to nudity. “I don’t have any problem with showing myself,” she has said. “I think that a real actor has the obligation to totally show him or herself, emotionally as well as physically, when required.” She has often been included in People Magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful Women in the World”. Recently she was named one of the “Top Celebrity Hottest Moms.” Winslet considers her performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) one of her best and probably her favorite. She reunited with her good friend Leonardo DiCaprio in Revolutionary Road (2008), directed by her then-husband Sam Mendes. Her children call DiCaprio Uncle Leo. She’s now married – her third marriage – to British businessman Ted Rocknroll, nephew of billionaire Richard Branson. Winslet has three children (from three different husbands). Motherhood, she says, is everything to her and organic to her acting. “My children come with me everywhere I go. To me even the character of Adele in Labor Day had to be a good mother. I wanted her to be a good mother. She has an intense romance with this dangerous man, and yet her child is everything to her.” For her accomplishments as an actress, she was awarded Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2012. Winslet will be also seen in 2014 in the drama A Little Chaos and the action/adventure Divergent.
