Reprising (and directing) on the big screen the role he played in the 2010 Broadway production of August Wilson’s celebrated play, Denzel Washington has a straightforward definition for the talkative, conflicted and baseball-obsessed Troy and the drama that unfolds around him: “It’s a story about a family that could take place at any time, about this husband’s frustration and what he chooses to do about it, the poor decisions that he makes”, he told us. “The family part of it, which is the basis of it, is universal.

Denzel Washington plays Sam Chisolm, the bounty hunter who heads up a rogue team of mavericks enlisted as a ragtag defense force by a beleaguered Western village in Antoine Fuqua’s retooling of John Sturges’ 1960 original (itself based on Akira Kurosawa’s classic Seven Samurai). Washington, who steps into the role played by Yul Brynner spoke to the HFPA in Toronto.

Director Antoine Fuqua’s multi-cultural version of John Sturges 1960s movie The Magnificent Seven (which already was a cultural translation of Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai) boasts, like its predecessor, an outstanding ensemble cast lead by two very different, talented actors – Golden Globe winner and Cecil B. deMille recipient Denzel Washington and Chris Pratt.

The Magnificent Seven is one of the oldest tales in Hollywood. The original was made in 1960, directed by John Sturges and fondly remembered as a true Western classic (as well as his musical theme–Dun! Dun de dun! Dun! de dun-dun-dun!- one of the most popular in Hollywood history).
