Martin Scorsese

As a tribute to Martin Scorsese on his 80th birthday (November 17, 2022), we explored our extensive archives of exclusive HFPA interviews dating back to 1971 to review what the acclaimed director said in the 1990s about the movies, actors and filmmakers he admired, his contemporaries and his frequent collaborators. The journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association interviewed and photographed Scorsese 15 times from 1976 to 2019, honored him with three Golden Globes as Best Director out of nine nominations, as well as presenting him with the Cecil B.

Beginning in 1952 when the Cecil B.  deMille Award was presented to its namesake visionary director, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has awarded its most prestigious prize 66 times.

It wasn’t so much a clash of the titans, it was more like a tribute to them when Bruce Springsteen sat down with Martin Scorsese for a public conversation at Hollywood's Raleigh Studios, organized by Netflix. The pre-Emmy event was held in support of the campaign for Springsteen’s one-man show “Springsteen on Broadway”.

For over 40 years the HFPA has recorded famous and celebrated actors, actresses and filmmakers. The world's largest collection of its kind - over  10,000  items- is now in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts &  Sciences Margaret Herrick Library.

By the time Akira Kurosawa and Martin Scorsese met on the Croisette in 1990, both were already celebrated master filmmakers. Scorsese had one Palme d'Or (Taxi Driver) and one Best Director prize (After Hours), plus three nominations for the Palme (Alice Doesn't LIve Here Anymore, The King of Comedy and After Hours) and one Golden Globe nomination for Raging Bull.

Martin Scorsese latest opus, Silence, is an intimate prayer to the power of faith and the search for oneself. The composition of the soundtrack was very close to Scorsese, as he is equally passionate about music and film.

For the second year running the Hollywood Foreign Press Association enjoyed a special spot in the annual Il Cinema Ritrovato (Rediscovered Cinema)  which takes place in Bologna, Italy. The festival showcases classic, rare and restored movies and has become a must-see event for cinephiles.

In a personal letter to HFPA President Theo Kingma, Martin Scorsese, the founder and chairman of the Film Foundation, thanked the HFPA for supporting the restoration of classic films through generous funds. Because of your passionate commitment, writes Mr Scorsese, future generations will experience a wealth of cinematic treasures that would otherwise have been lost.
