Already a Golden Globe winner for his electrifying portrayal of Elton John in Rocketman, he has also been nominated for a Grammy and a BAFTA for the same role.

Taron Egerton remembers the moment quite vividly. On a warm May evening in Cannes, Rocketman was having its World Premiere at the prestigious French film festival.

This year a musical took Cannes by storm. Rocketman was out of competition here but it certainly was the talk of the Croisette in the early days of the festival, bringing a bit of rock n’ roll glamour to the proceedings.

When the lights came back up in the cavernous Grand Theatre Lumière after the world premiere of Rocketman, applause was thunderous and emotions ran high – especially in the central seats reserved for dignitaries and the film’s cast, gathered around its subjects: Bernie Taupin and Elton John. The thunder was commensurate with the spectacle which had just concluded on the GTL’s widescreen which was augmented by the unique feeling of having absorbed a biographical celebration of someone actually present right there in the theater.

I was lucky to meet Elton John in London in October 1970 as I was starting my journalistic career. He had just returned from Los Angeles after his explosive American debut with 6 nights at the legendary West Hollywood Troubadour.

With the worldwide box office success of Kingsman: The Secret Service in 2014, expectations have been high for director Matthew Vaughn's sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle. This time he has suited the British spies with an American counterpart The Statesmen, a band of gun-toting, Stetson-wearing cowboys expanding the cast to include Jeff Bridges, Channing Tatum and Halle Berry.
