If there were any questions about how one of Marvel’s lesser known franchise would fare in its adaptation to the big screen, those appear to be put to rest by the stellar performance of Guardians of the Galaxy. The comic book powerhouse’s first foray in adventure-comedy appears to have hit a bulls eye with the genre faithful as well as with audiences worldwide with a film that marries the epic scale of Star Wars and the extravagance of Flash Gordon. Credit the vision of Marvel producer Kevin Feige and director James Gunn who carried indie sci-fi sensibilities to the big-ticket Marvel world (tellingly the film features cameos by both Stan Lee and Lloyd Kaufman, founder of Z-Movie horror house Troma, and mentor to Gunn when he worked there). As for the film’s star Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation), he characterizes his character of Peter Quill/Starlord as falling “somewhere between Han Solo and Back to the Future’s Marty McFly."
