It seems only yesterday that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, fresh from pounding the bejesus out of hapless heels on the world’s wrestling rings, first tried his hand at that other, Hollywood kind of acting. How time flies. Today Mr. Johnson has long since dropped the “rock” moniker and joined the ranks of A-listers by adding charm and humor to his muscle-bound action persona. All those qualities come handy in his latest, ehm…labor: Playing mighty Hercules in Brett Ratner’s eponymous epic. The film harkens to classic sword and sandal epics eschewing CGI overkill making the most of breathtaking locations, sweeping battle scenes with actual extras and a cast that includes John Hurt, Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell and Joseph Fiennes. At the center of it all is Dwayne Johnson showcasing a truly mythical physique and at the same demonstrating that to achieve that level of success in Hollywood big muscles are just not enough. You also need talent and charisma and, as Johnson puts it “the most important muscle of all, the one between your ears”.
