Gael Garcia Bernal, Mozart in the Jungle – Nominee, Best Performance by an Actor in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy

This is Bernal’s second nomination for the show; he won last year in the role of Maestro Rodrigo de Souza, conductor of the New York Symphony.  The character is loosely based on Gustavo Dudamel who coached Bernal to actually conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl.  Bernal told us how nervous he was.  “Oh my god, there was a moment when I turned to the audience and my mouth was so dry, I smiled and couldn’t go back.  I was like, oh no, this smile will stay like that forever.”  Loosely based on a memoir by oboist Blair Tindall, the series deals with the lives of musicians in New York City, and the tensions between the old guard at the orchestra and the brash new conductor who upends their traditionalist thinking.  Season 3 is already streaming on Amazon.
