Burly and lovable Italian American actor Danny Aiello played Cher’s out-of-luck suitor in Norma Jewison’s Golden Globe-nominated Moonstruck. He also appeared in The Godfather: Part II, The Front, Fort Apache the BronxThe Purple Rose of Cairo, 29th Street, Ruby, and The Pickle and The Cemetery Club. But it was his role as Sal, the gruff pizza joint owner in Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing that earned him his personal Globe nomination and consigned him to film memory. “I’m heartbroken,” wrote Lee in an Instagram post.  “Just found out my brother Danny Aiello made his transition last night. Danny, we made cinema history together with Do The Right Thing. May you rest in PARADISE.”

A sentiment shared by his Golden Globe family as we remember a wonderful artist.
