World Box Office, September 10 – 16, 2018

Arriving in theaters 30 years after the first Predator, the one with Arnold Schwarzenegger fighting extraterrestrials, Shane Black’s The Predator took the top spot at the North American market but it came in below industry estimates. Analysts had predicted a debut in the range of $36 to $40 million. It generated $24 million instead, overseas it was good for just above $30 million: amounts that do not appear strong enough to ensure the fourth installment in the Predator series will recover its $90 million price tag.

The opposite can be said about The Nun. On its second outing, the latest installment of The Conjuring universe fell a steep 66 percent in the domestic market, generating $18.2 million. But it added $30 million overseas, for a global total of $230 million ($85 million domestic). Not bad for a film produced with a budget of $22 million that could easily top the $300 million worldwide mark. Another solid victory for the franchise and for Warner Bros.: the five-film horror franchise has had a combined cost of $105 million and, so far, has generated over $1.4 billion worldwide. The Nun also happens to be the biggest Warner Bros. title of the year in several territories. In Indonesia it surpassed Batman v Superman and is now Warner Bros.’ highest grossing film ever in that country.

The second spot in the worldwide charts went to China’s L Storm, with $33.2 million. Next is Paul Feig’s black comedy A Simple Favor. North America was good for $16 million. Add the overseas revenues and the film, starring Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively and Henry Golding, is close to a $20million debut. Over two months after its release, Mission: Impossible – Fallout keeps doing brisk business, grossing an extra $16 million out of 57 markets and $2.3 million in North America. That brings the global total for the Tom Cruise starrer to $760 million, making it the top-grossing title in the franchise both domestically and globally. China alone has been good $163 million, followed by Japan with $41 million, the UK with $31 million and then France and Germany.

John M. Chu’s Crazy Rich Asians was next in the global charts, coming in sixth position after generating this weekend an extra $7.3 million. The Warner Bros. romantic comedy has grossed $38 million overseas and $150 million in North America. The Meg, another Warner Bros. title, crossed the $500 million mark globally. So did Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, while Disney-Marvel’s Ant-Man and the Wasp passed the $400 million mark, giving Disney the right to claim that three and a half months before the end of the year it has already surpassed the revenues of 2017 .

Finally, White Boy Rick starring Matthew McConaughey and Richie Merritt as a father and son involved with the crack cocaine epidemic. Based on a real-life story of FBI informants and betrayal in Detroit’s 1980s and directed by Yann Demange, the film ended its first weekend in the US with a dollar amount very similar to Crazy Rich Asians. As we write, we have not been able to confirm which of the two films got the No. four spot and which one ended up in fifth place.
