Beginning in 1952 when the Cecil B.  deMille Award was presented to its namesake visionary director, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association has awarded its most prestigious prize 66 times.

Al Pacino snagged his 18th Golden Globe nomination -this year, for Best Supporting Actor- for his portrayal of labor leader Jimmy Hoffa in Martin Scorsese's The Irishman. It caps five decades of extraordinary accomplishments in a long-lived career (Pacino will turn 80 April 25, 2020).

Al Pacino receives the Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama Golden Globe for Scent of a Woman, directed by Martin Brest, at the 50th-anniversary ceremony held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel on Saturday, January 23, 1993. Jodie Foster presented him the award as the previous year’s Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama for Silence of the Lambs.

After tackling the Bernie Madoff story in Wizard of Lies with Robert De Niro and that of Jack Kevorkian in You Don't Know Jack with Al Pacino, Barry Levinson revisits another sordid story of moral dilemma and failure featuring an aging and almost Shakespearian figure in HBO’s Paterno. Pacino (who also played Phil Spector in David Mamet’s eponymous HBO movie) portrays the legendary Penn State football coach’s fall from grace as the sexual abuse scandal surrounding his assistant Jerry Sandusky unfolds.

  It was more than half a century ago when the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recognized the chameleon-like acting skills of a newcomer to the big screen. In 1957 the HFPA nominated Eli Wallach for Best Actor Award for his role in Elia Kazan's Baby Doll.
