With those big blue eyes that enchanted the world in hits such as La La Land, Birdman, and The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Golden Globe winner Emma Stone is now ready to show that she can also play mean, and do it well. Playing the title role in Cruella as the younger version of the fur-crazy vamp from Disney's classic cartoon 101 Dalmatians, this time around she is about to go head-to-head with the more sophisticated designer Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson).

Thanks to the loud-and-clear, stronger-than-expected performance of A Quiet Place Part II, combined with the solid showing of Cruella, the recent Memorial Day weekend buoyed hopes that moviegoing attendance is indeed back with a vengeance. With the one-two punch of John Krasinski’s sequel to his 2018 horror hit and Emma Stone’s origin story of the puppy-hating villainess, it was the first weekend in over a year when the North American box office ticket sales exceeded $100 million.

One of the youngest thespians to win a Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy Globe, Emma Stone was only 28, when she earned the coveted award for Damien Chazelle’s romantic musical, La La Land, for which she also won the Academy Award. In The Favourite, Yorgos Lanthimos’ smart, vastly entertaining period piece, Stone plays Abigail, the penniless cousin of Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz), who begins as a chambermaid but soon climbs to the upper echelons at the court of  Queen Anne (Olivia Colman).

After the heavily trending palette of blues, pinks and purples of the previous week, colors became more variant, but make no mistake – those hues are here for the season. Add in mustard through gold with the traditional solids thrown in and we are predicting the most colorful red carpet in years.

Lighter colors, soft peachy pink and beading caught the spotlight at the Venice Film Festival, while men went predictable.

Golden Globe winner Emma Stone portrays tennis maverick  Billie Jean King in the upcoming movie Battle of the Sexes. Emma, 28, is the same age as Billie Jean was when, in 1973, she met and beat tennis Wall of Famer and self-defined hustler Bobby Riggs, writing an important chapter for equality in sports and elsewhere.

Emma Stone and Steve Carell do battle in Battle of the Sexes, based on the wild, real-life story of a made-for-TV tennis match.  Films frequently undergo all sorts of different cast and crew permutations during development, and Battle of the Sexes was no different.

There are two, count’em, tennis movies bowing in Toronto this year: Janus Metz Pedersen’s Borg vs. McEnroe and Battle of the Sexes by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Golden Globe nominees for Little Miss Sunshine).

Actress Emma Stone, 28, receives her third Golden Globe nomination for the role of an ambitious and loveable aspiring actress in the musical La La Land that combines fairytales and reality. She loved musicals already as a kid, and used to go to see them on stage with her mom.

Emma Stone has been a fan of the musicals – on stage and on screen – since she was, by her own reckoning, “very young. ” “My mom was a huge Les Mis fan and she played it in the house and explained what that was all about”, she told us at the Toronto Film Festival.
