John Singleton, 1991 on “Boyz n the Hood” – Out of the Archives

John Singleton was honored with a tribute during the 2022-2023 Academic year by USC (University of Southern California), his alma mater, where he developed the script for his 1991 directing debut, Boyz n the Hood, while attending the screenwriting program at USC’s Film School (the school has since been renamed the School of Cinematic Arts, or SCA). For this film, Singleton was nominated for two Academy Awards in 1992 for Best Director and Best Screenplay.

Josh Hartnett, 2001 on War – Out of the Archives

The journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press first interviewed promising young actor Josh Hartnett in May 2001 when he acted with Ben Affleck in Pearl Harbor, directed by Michael Bay: they met him again in December 2001 to talk about Black Hawk Down, directed by Ridley Scott, the story of a 1993 US military raid in Mogadishu, Somalia. Hartnett gave his thoughts on war and the question of military intervention in other countries – a theme certainly relevant today in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Jessica Lange, 1982 on Frances Farmer – Out of the Archives

Jessica Lange, winner of five Golden Globes for her acting out of 16 nominations, received a special award as Best Acting Debut in a Motion Picture for King Kong (1976), won as Best Supporting Actress for Tootsie (1982) directed by Sydney Pollack starring Dustin Hoffman, was nominated as Best Actress in a drama for Frances (1982).   She talked to the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press in 1982 about playing actress Frances Farmer.

Ellen Barkin, 1991 on “Switch” – Out of the Archives

Ellen Barkin received a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actress – Motion Picture – Musical/Comedy in 1992 for Switch, written and directed by Blake Edwards from the 1959 play by George Axelrod, Goodbye Charlie. She spoke to the journalists of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in 1991 about playing a dead man reincarnated in a woman’s body as punishment for his misogynist behavior, and forced to confront his past from a different perspective.
