Ava DuVernay

Ava DuVernay (born in Long Beach, California, August 24, 1972) wrote, directed and produced two movies that premiered at the Sundance Film festival, I Will Follow (2010) and Middle of Nowhere (2012). She directed Selma (2014) starring Daniel Oyelowo as Martin Luther King, which received 4 Golden Globe nominations for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, and won for Best Song, “Glory” by John Legend and Common. She also directed A Wrinkle in Time (2018) from the 1962 novel by Madeleine L’Engle. For television Vernay co-created with Oprah Winfrey the series Queen Sugar (2021-2022), co-wrote and directed the miniseries When They See Us (2019).
