He composed the score for movies like The Pawnbroker (1964) by Sidney Lumet, In the Heat of the Night (1967) by Norman Jewison, In Cold Blood (1967) written and directed by Richard Brooks from the 1966 novel by Truman Capote, Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969) by Paul Mazursky, John and Mary (1969) by Peter Yeats, The Getaway (1972) by Sam Peckinpah. Jones produced The Color Purple (1985) directed by Steven Spielberg and composed the score.
