Boots Riley on “Sorry to Bother You”

July 9, 2018

Sorry to Bother You is a provocative and revolutionary comedy from the mind of Boots Riley, best-known as the lead vocalist for The Coup. The film was shot in Oakland in 2017 and released by Annapurna Pictures. Sorry to Bother You marks the first feature film by Boots Riley, who also wrote the screenplay. The story follows a telemarketer, Cassius “Cash” Green (Lakeith Stanfield), who quickly rises to the top of the company ladder at the cost of his morals and humanity. Since its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2018, the film has garnered ecstatic reviews. HFPA journalist Ting Ting Xu sat down with Boots Riley and talked about the ideology behind this film.
