Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg talk “Deepwater Horizon”

The Deepwater Horizon accident and subsequent oil spill, which spewed millions of gallons of crude oil into the Gulf o Mexico, ranks as the nation’s worst environmental disaster. The devastating spill cast a pall of doom on the Gulf coast and embodied the real potential for ecological catastrophes posed by our carbon-based energy infrastructure. But within that bitter lesson – what have been to some extent lost to history – are the stories of the eleven platform workers who perished on the ill-fated BP oil rig when the accident occurred. That is the story Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg focus on in their Deepwater Horizon, which premiered at the Toronto film festival earlier this year. We spoke to the filmmakers about why it was important to them to tell the story of the victims and their families.
