On Music: Julianne Moore Goes to the Opera

Soon we will see Golden Globe winner (twice) Julianne Moore in yet another challenging role in Bel Canto, in which she plays an opera singer. We asked her if music really helps her work as an actress.

“It depends on the job, you know.  There’s a job that I’m preparing for right now where I’m listening to a lot of music.  Music that the character listens to and so that’s very helpful.  And yes, I just did this movie called Bel Canto where I play an opera singer so I listened to opera which was really new to me. b I had no education in opera, no real exposure to it, it all sounded the same to me. Then I saw “Der Rosenkavalier” where, all the major roles and it’s also this kind of this great love story with and the older woman, a younger woman and this woman playing the man. They all have different kinds of voices and they sing this beautiful piece at the end. That’s where you hear where how the music has been written for those particular sounds because their voices are actually instruments.  They hit a particular tone and that was fascinating.”
