Oral History: Christopher Walken on Playing Fathers

Christopher WalkenWild Mountain Thyme by John Patrick Shanley, and this is not the first time he plays a father. In 2005 he talked to HFPA journalists about playing the father of the bride in the comedy Wedding Crashers.
“The director came to the hotel I was in, we sat in the lobby and we talked about the movie and I said to him that I was always interested in the way Ronald ReaganWedding Crashers, to make him smarter than he seemed to be.”
“It was a different kind of part for me because I played many villains and in this movie, I was a father, a good person, the Secretary of the Treasury, which is unusual for me. Also, I don’t have children, but I thought, what would I be like, if I had a beautiful daughter? When I was a kid in high school I would go to pick up my girlfriend, her father would always be there and the way he would look at me was scary, so I thought, if the father is looking at you, you better be careful.”
“That’s the kind of weddings that I went to in New York when I was a kid, they were not expensive weddings, they had Polka music and big kegs of beer, free food and lots of girls. So it was pretty good. There were always guys who would go to weddings to meet girls.”
“For me, it’s not so complicated to do comedy, because when I became a movie actor I started to play villains, but before that in the theater, I almost always did musical comedy. I usually played somebody silly, so most of my experience is with that sort of thing, and when I was young before I became an actor, I was a professional dancer in musicals.”
“I do like to work as much as I can because I don’t have children, I don’t have hobbies, I don’t do anything else. And I’m glad that I don’t have children. I have two brothers and they have plenty of children, they come to my house and I am always very glad when they leave. I have a wife, I’ve been married for thirty-five years, and I have some cats, but I can open the door and they go out, so it’s quite nice.”
