Oral History: Drew Barrymore on Nudity

For over 40 years the HFPA has recorded famous and celebrated actors, actresses and filmmakers. The world’s largest collection of its kind – over 10,000  items- is now in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences Margaret Herrick Library. In this excerpt from our archives from 1995, future Golden Globe winner Drew Barrymore explains why she posed nude for Playboy magazine.

Steven Spielberg still sees me as a child, makes me remove my lipstick when I go into his office.Wait till he sees me nude in Playboy. His scolding phone call!

It was like my own personal adventure. I totally had a great time with it and I think I’m very comfortable in my skin and to me, the human body is a really beautiful thing.

I’m not for extra gratuitous nudity but this was really interesting and a dare. There are going to be those very few people that are embarrassed about something like that, like my boyfriend’s parents, you know, and I’m just hoping atChristmas dinner that no one in the family is going to bring it up.Other than that, I don’t think that you can go into something like that with preconceived notions or expectations. Either you’re going to get complete negative flak for it or you’re going to expect everyone to think that it’s so great and life doesn’t work like that. So I just went into it,having fun and luckily it was a positive thing. People thought it was interesting and grooved on it a little bit so that’scool but, you know, it was for me.”
